Custom/QC DOSTM Display FAQ

Problem:

The user gets the following error message: Device incompatible with Graphics Driver (Graphics Error -5000) when sending output to the screen.

Solution:

1). Ask them if they have a color or monochrome monitor. If it is color they probably have the EGA or VGA driver loaded when in actuality they have a CGA monitor and graphics card. Have them use IBMCO.SYS. If they have an old monochrome monitor (NOT VGA monochrome) they probably need to load HERCBW.SYS.

2). Ask them how old the computer is. If it was manufactured around or before 1987 it would probably be either EGA or CGA. Have the user keep trying different screen drivers, starting with IBMEGA.SYS and moving back to IBMCO.SYS until you can get one to work. If both of the above fail it's possible they have an incompatible graphics card. NOTE: Old IBM PS/2 Model 30's don't have an actual VGA card, use IBMCO.SYS for these machines.
