BackgroundIn the years since Shewhart published his seminal book, The Economic Control of the Quality of Manufactured Products, there have been many applications both of his concepts and subsequently developed advanced concepts. These techniques, which have served a useful function in monitoring and improving quality, are referred to as Statistical Process Control (SPC). The widespread use of microcomputers has helped bring applications of these techniques directly to the factory floor. But, efforts to date have been primarily in the area of computerization for the individual tasks of SPC and Design of Experiments (DOE). Little emphasis has been placed on integration of these approaches into a system that would allow monitoring, analysis and adjustments of control variables to improve plant performance.
